Syria will take on Japan in the FIBA Asia Cup on July 15. The very first to concede that it has been difficult for Chinese Taipei to recapture its former grandeur were Chen Ying-Chun and Ray Chen. Chinese Taipei struggled in the following two competitions after finishing fourth in the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship in Manila, finishing 13th and 12th in 2015 and 2017, respectively. It was rather logical considering that members of a unique group led by people like Tseng Wen-ting, Lin Chih-chieh, and Quincy Davis gradually moved aside to let the next generation lead the charge. Since Chen played with them in the FIBA Asia Challenge 2014 in China, where they lost to Iran and settled for a silver medal, he has some knowledge of the so-called “golden generation.”

With that, the 29-year-old is now seen as a leader by this youthful group of players being prepared to be regulars on the national team. And he is accepting that. Benson Lin, also known as Lin Ting-Chien, is one of those he is mentoring. Benson Lin has gained recognition from the days of his young national team after averaging over 21 points in the FIBA U16 Asian Championship in 2015 and the FIBA U17 World Cup in 2016. Given his experience compared to his colleagues, he has undoubtedly earned the moniker of the next big thing at the age of 22. Given their familiarity with one another and the potential for it to serve as a strong foundation for the program’s rebirth prospects, Chen and Lin are both considered to be Chinese Taipei’s main backcourt. Chen revealed that he had known Lin since they were children since Chen played under Lin’s father’s instruction in high school.
