Serbia vs France will take place in the FIBA World Cup on September 27 at Sydney SuperDome. It didn’t take long for the crowd of over 9,300 to realize that the Opals were serious about their Sunday night match against Serbia. This was due to the frenetic defensive focus and energy that was on display in the first few minutes. On their route to a spectacular 69-54 victory, they met each obstacle Serbia threw before them, a genuine competitor of the Opals. As a result of Marianna Tolo’s well-deserved inclusion in the starting lineup, Australia began the game with greater muscle and grunt in the paint. This strategy paid off as Serbia was put in difficult situations on the court by Australia’s flawless defense. Serbia was constantly being pressured into turnovers by Australia’s intense defense, which gave the Opals ample opportunities to score. It would have been simple for Australia to fall in love with long-range shots to start the game against Serbia after scoring a tournament-high 18 triples in their last game against Mali.

However, it was impressive to see how they drove to the basket early on, with Sami Whitcomb leading the way, to create space on the perimeter and prepare for three-point shots as the game progressed. A move by Kristy Wallace in the closing two minutes of the first quarter really set the tone for the Opals for the rest of the game, even though the Opals had several defensive highlights in the period, including causing an unbelievable four Serbian shot clock violations. Wallace applied her trademark defensive pressure to Katarina Zec at half court when she had no business doing so and got an offensive foul. Wallace’s performance at that precise moment had the Australian crowd and her teammates in awe, notably captain Tess Madgen, who went up to Wallace and praised her for her tenacious work.
