The match is Real Betis vs Real Madrid. The history of the Supercopa de Espaa de Baloncesto has been dramatic. The Asociación de Clubs de Baloncesto (ACB; the top division of Spanish soccer) first established the competition in 1984 as the Federation Cup, which consisted of just one match between the cup winner and the league champion. The competition’s first four iterations (1984–1987) took place in the middle of the regular season. Due to little interest, the 1988–89 edition was canceled; after this, the 1989–90 season saw the competition’s official cancellation. The ACB brought back the competition in 2004 as the Supercopa ACB (known as the Supercopa Endesa since 2011). Real Betis, the hosts, take on Real Madrid, the regular season runners-up (but playoff champions) in the 2021–22 EuroLeague, Copa del Rey, and Liga ACB, in the first of the two semifinal matches at Sevilla’s Palacio Municipal De Deportes San Pablo.
The “tri-runners-up” are still one of the best teams in Spanish basketball, having strength and talent at each of the five positions. The club’s star big man Edy Tavares, along with teammates Guerschon Yabusele and Vincent Poirier, who both recently led France to the EuroBasket final, is returning for a sixth season, which is crucial. Argentine Gabrielle Deck, Hungarian dám Hanga, and Frenchman Fabien Causseur are joined on the wings by Musa Dánan, 23, of Bosnia and Hercegovina, and former NBA lottery pick, who is still only 27 years old. Madrid’s talent is apparent, but there may be cause for concern at the lead guard position, which, although having a wealth of senior experience, may lack youth and dynamism.
Meanwhile, Shannon Evans, a point guard who was born in Philadelphia and currently plays for Betis, is a 28-year-old American who formerly played for Arizona State University before relocating to Europe. Evans is back with Betis for a second season after stints in Hungary, France, and Turkey.
