At the domestic basketball awards, which were voted by the 10 NBL coaches and five independents, including former Tall Black Casey Frank, Mitch Langton, 25, was named NBL general manager of the year. The general manager who has contributed the most to a team over the course of the year receives the honor. After saving the club, Langton was without a doubt the favorite. The Taranaki Steelformers Airs finished last in 2021, drawing a small crowd to the TSB Stadium.
The Nelson Giants were the Airs’ final opponent at home last week, and they played in front of a sellout crowd that had been close to full all season. Hopkinson said he’s not sure where the club would be without Langton’s enthusiasm and hunger for success. Other accolades included several Taranaki players. Javonte Douglas and Anthony Hilliard were named to the all-star five, Corey Webster was named the best New Zealand guard, and Anthony Hilliard was awarded the Alan Bland Memorial Trophy as the “scoring champion.” Xavier Cooks, an immigrant for the Wellington Saints, was the most valuable player this year. The Airs will take on either the Hawke’s Bay Hawks, Wellington Saints, or Auckland Tuatara in this weekend’s playoff games.
