The match is Mali vs France. The Australian Opals were hoping to make up for their opening-game loss to France on Friday night at the Sydney Superdome against Mali. Mali had sprung out to a 10-2 lead before the Opals could settle into the game, causing Sandy Brondello, the coach of the Opals, to call a timeout and bring in some size off the bench in the form of Marianna Tolo and Lauren Jackson, who immediately shifted the pace of the first quarter.

By the time Jackson was substituted back into the game in the final seconds of the period, the Opals had built a double-digit lead and never looked back, cruising to a 118-58 victory to move to 1-1. This was made possible by the inside-out combination between Tolo and Jackson, which helped the Aussies go on a 19-0 run.

The Opals struggled to make shots in their opening game against France, connecting on just 26.1 percent of their field goals and 21.7 percent of their threes. However, as Tolo and Jackson dominated Mali inside, Australia’s shooters found some much-needed space on the perimeter to let loose, sinking 18 of 33 threes while accumulating 31 assists on 40 made field goals.

The Opals saw seven different players reach double digits, which was encouraging. Ezi Magbegor led the team with 15 points, while Sara Blicavs, Darcee Garbin, and Cayla George each ended with 14 points. Jackson ended the game with eight points, four rebounds, and two assists in little under nine minutes of action, but her influence on the Opals’ offense won’t be reflected in the numbers because of her calm demeanor and astute decision-making. Now France and Mali will come face to face in the FIBA world cup.
