Gilas The road for the Philippines to the FIBA Asia Cup quarterfinals has simply become harder. After suffering a 92-75 defeat to New Zealand to finish the group stage at the Istora Stadium on Sunday, July 17, the Philippines will play threatening Japan in the knockout rounds. The Filipinos, who were outmatched by the Tall Blacks on the boards and placed third in Group D with a 1-2 card, will face the Akatsuki Five, the second-seeded team from Group C, for a spot in the semifinals.

The Tall Blacks, who collected 61 boards to the Philippines’ 28 in the defeat, completely outrebounded the Filipinos in the fight for rebounds. Gilas only made one mistake during the game, but it wasn’t enough because they also had trouble scoring, shooting just 37.3 percent from the field. To go directly into the Top 8, the Filipinos must defeat the Japanese, who came in second in Group C. But if they lose, the Philippines would be forced to miss the Top 8 for the first time since 2009.
