France vs Japan will take place in the FIBA World Cup on September 26 at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Center. Japan paid the price for a weak first quarter in Friday’s FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup against Serbia, losing 69-64 after falling short on a second-half comeback. Tokyo’s Olympic silver medalists Japan had to fill out most of their Group B match at the Sydney Superdome after she lost 24-9 at the end of the first quarter. Forward Maki Takada scored 15 points for world No. 8 Japan, while forward Giovana Nogic contributed 13 points as part of a balanced attack for 10th-placed Serbia 67-62 with 1:06 remaining. But when its coach Toru Kozuka’s team covered, it was close. As a result, both sides were tied at 1–1 after his two-day group match in Sydney.

Canada remained undefeated in Group B, beating France 59-45 to her, and in Group A her three-time champions the USA beat Puerto Rico 106-42 to her. Australia suffered its first defeat against France in six World Cup encounters on Thursday night at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena, snapping a run of 19 victories in World Cup qualifying games going back to 1994. Since Group B is the more competitive of the two World Cup groups, the setback means that the Opals have some work ahead of them to advance. In her first competitive game for the Opals since declaring her retirement from international competition in 2013, Australia’s most accomplished female basketball player, 41-year-old Jackson, made a brief appearance from the bench. She made an early impression on defense but had her role diminished in the second half when Marianna Tolo, a fellow center, started to assert herself and get more playing time.

With a minute left in the first quarter, Jackson scored his first and only points of the contest from long range, regaining Australia’s advantage. Jackson became just the third woman to reach 600 points at a World Cup thanks to the three-pointer. Jackson entered the game in the last four minutes after sitting out the third quarter in an effort to calm her team’s jitters, but the Opals were unable to contain the French once they broke free in the second half. The final score may not have accurately reflected how close the game was; the lead changed seven times in the first half. Both teams were jittery on opening night, but Bec Allen for the Opals came out strong and had 11 points at halftime. France applied more defensive pressure than Australia, capitalizing on their mistakes to score more frequently from turnovers and pick-and-roll through the paint for simple baskets.
