In its first game in nearly a year, Kia Nurse finished with nine points to help Canada’s women’s basketball team defeat Serbia 67-60 to start the FIBA World Cup. Kayla Alexander added 13 points. For the fourth-ranked Canadians, Nirra Fields finished with 12 points, while Natalie Achonwa scored 10 points and eight rebounds. With 18 points, Yvonne Anderson topped No. 10 Serbia.

The Canadians had a good night thanks to Nurse’s Night. The Phoenix Mercury guard played 19 minutes and scored Canada’s first points of the competition in her first game back after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee during a WNBA semifinal match almost a year ago.

Canada won two bronze medals at the World Cup, in 1979 and 1986. The Canadian team reached the Olympic quarterfinals in both the 2012 and 2016 games. In the 12-team World Cup, they were placed in the challenging Pool B. On Friday, No. 6 France will go next. Canada will also play the current Olympic silver medalists, Japan, the hosts, No. 3-ranked Australia, and Mali to finish the group stage. On September 29, the top four from each group advance to the quarterfinals. The medal games are on October 1 while the semifinals are on September 30.
