When Stevens signed, OSU coach Wayne Tinkle claimed the former three-star prospect was a little bit off the recruiting radar due to minor injuries sustained after his sophomore year of high school that diminished his prominence on the AAU circuit as well as a cut-short junior season due to the pandemic. In high school, Stevens was a center, but Oregon State sees him as a small forward. Tinkle claimed that while Stevens needed to gain weight and muscle, he already possessed the qualities of determination and drive. Stevens acknowledges that he still has a lot to learn defensively and that he is adjusting to a faster tempo that needs more critical thinking than in high school. He has been watching film sessions with Tinkle to understand how he can develop and apply it to the court in order to help with that. Shana Stevens, Stevens’ mother, has supported and mentored him throughout his sports career. She has been her son’s financial supporter, giving him money for everything from new sneakers to AAU trips.
