In the San Miguel Beermen’s comeback victory over the Converge FiberXers, 111-92, on Sunday in the 2022 PBA Philippine Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City, CJ Perez recorded a triple double performance. In the All-Filipino conference, Perez contributed 15 points, 13 rebounds, and 12 assists to SMB’s fourth victory in five games. The Beermen scored 34 points in the second session against Converge’s 23 points to conclude the first half at 62-39 while playing without Chris Ross, Vic Manuel, and Terrence Romeo. It was difficult for Converge to mount a comeback in the second half since they had their largest advantage, 57-26, at the 4:02 point of the second quarter. In addition to Perez, June Mar Fajardo and Mo Tautuaa also recorded double-doubles, with Fajardo recording 18 points and 16 rebounds and Tautuaa contributing 19 points and 10 boards. Jericho Cruz led the SMB to victory with 22 points.

Current form

With 18 seconds left in the overtime round and Phoenix leading by 5 points (102-97) after a basket by Matthew Wright, the game was a back-and-forth shootout between the two sides. Oftana promptly reacted with a triple to reduce the margin to just one possession (102-100). The following play saw Larry Muyang of Phoenix shoot 1-of-2 from the free line before Oftana sank another long shot to force overtime. JR Quiahan made a cold-blooded three-pointer with 27 seconds remaining in the extra period when the Fuel Masters trailed by only one point, 108-109, to increase the Road Warriors’ advantage to two possessions, 112-108, and destroy any dreams of a Fuel Masters comeback.

Anticipated Winner

Without Williams, the TNT offense has struggled, scoring only 80.7 points per game while shooting 36.5 percent from the field, which ranks third-worst in the league. However, Reyes argued that they should not continually focus on Williams’ absence or make excuses for it. Wright ended with 19 points and 8 assists before fouling out in the first seconds of overtime, while freshman Tyler Tio added 18 points in a losing effort as the Fuel Masters suffered their third straight loss and fell to 2-5.
