Belgium will take on Greece in the 2025 EuroBasket World Cup Qualifiers on November 14. Tryggvi Hlinason and Elvar Fridriksson are on the edge of becoming heroes in their country, but they are both working hard to maintain their modesty while aiming to create history. In the first game of Window 5 of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 European Qualifiers, Iceland will play Georgia with the knowledge that, if they win, they would have a two-game advantage over their nearest Group L rivals with only three games remaining. That would put Fridriksson, Hlinason, and the company one step closer to enabling Iceland, with an official population of 376,248 people, to surpass Montenegro as the smallest country to qualify for a World Cup. Montenegro participated in the 2019 World Cup. Montenegro had slightly over 620,000 people living there at the time.
“Everyone is working really hard because they are aware of the stakes. This would be extremely momentous for both Icelandic basketball and the wider sports community. It would be absolutely amazing, “Hlinason, who has 14.7 points, a team-high 10.3 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks in six games during this qualifying season, is third in scoring for Iceland. The basketball team from Iceland is attempting to duplicate the accomplishment achieved by the football team, which became the population-wise smallest country to qualify for a FIFA World Cup in 2018. That happened after Iceland qualified for and notably advanced to the Quarterfinals of the 2016 UEFA EURO. Iceland’s basketball team, which has previously qualified for the FIBA EuroBasket in 2015 and 2017, would naturally advance to the FIBA Basketball World Cup. Iceland did experience a setback, however, as they were unable to compete in the FIBA EuroBasket 2022 Qualifiers, forcing them to start their World Cup campaign in the Pre-Qualifiers.
