Bay Hawks vs Wellington Saints NBL match will be held on July 21. This year, a professional match will be played on December 25 for the first time in more than 50 years, breaking down the “last frontier” of Australian sporting events. The NBL has booked a basketball match between bitter rivals the Sydney Kings and Melbourne United for Christmas Day, which will please those who feel there can never be enough sport to enjoy throughout the year. In what has been called a “gamechanger” for Australian sport, the match will begin at 7.30 p.m. AEDT at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena. Sydney co-owner and chairman Paul Smith said the innovation better reflected a varied Australian community.
While NBA games have been played on December 25 in the US for many years, Australia hasn’t had any sporting events since the late 1960s, when Adelaide hosted Sheffield Shield cricket matches and a Test match against India. After receiving a negative response from players, the Big Bash League finally decided against reintroducing a Christmas Day cricket match in 2019. The annual Boxing Day Test match at the MCG is one of the nation’s most prestigious sports events, and this year the NBL will host a Christmas Eve game between the Adelaide 36ers and South East Melbourne Phoenix. Major athletic events are staged on both sides of December 25.
