The Atlanta Dream will head to the Gateway Center Arena for a WNBA matchup against the New York Liberty on Friday, August 12th. This will be the first of the two back-to-back games that these sides will play to end their WNBA campaign.
The Dream are heading into the matchup on the back of a disappointing loss against the Las Vegas Aces. Erica Wheeler and Maya Caldwell led the way for the team with 17 points each. Aarion McDonald made her presence felt as she scored 16 points and also grabbed 5 rebounds and as many assists off the bench. Cheyenne Parker and Rhyne Howard also contributed with 14 points each, but none of those efforts were enough to prevent a 97-90 loss for Atlanta. This was their second straight defeat. If they are to stay in the playoffs, they will have to put up a stellar performance against the Liberty in the next two games.
However, the team from New York are high on confidence after their stellar win against the Dallas Wings on Wednesday. Sami Whitcomb scored a team-high 15 points for the Liberty. Marine Johannes and Sabrina Ionescu racked 13 points each to make things easier for the team. After getting dominated in the first quarter of the game, the Liberty did really well to push back and put on a resilient display on the night. Their stellar effort helped them get to a 91-73 win. They are now on par with four other teams in the race to get to the playoffs. One of them is the Atlanta Dream, which is what makes the next two games interesting for Liberty.
The Dream have reported AD Durr and Nia Coffey to be out for the season due to injuries. Kristy Wallace, Tiffany Hayes and Monique Billings are all reported to be out for the game on Friday. These three players could be available for the team if they are able to make it to the playoffs. Meanwhile, Liberty has not yet listed anyone as part of their injury report.
