Auckland will go against Sydney in the Australia ABL on November 26 at North Harbour Stadium. The Auckland Tuatara’s 6-2 loss to the Melbourne Aces in their second playoff game at home on February 1, 2020, gave the impression that baseball had finally arrived in New Zealand. Even though the Tuatara didn’t advance to the Australian Baseball League championship on that specific day, they did demonstrate that there is a market for the sport in this country by bringing more than 4,000 spectators to North Harbour Stadium throughout that season, which had started with only a few hundred fans attending games. Then, however, Covid-19 struck.
The whole league was suspended for the 2021–22 season after the Tuatara unexpectedly quit the league the next year, infuriating ABL authorities who threatened to expel them from the league permanently. 1027 days after their last game there, the Tuatara will play the start of a four-game series against the Sydney Blue Sox on Friday night. It’s obvious how excited we are to play baseball in Albany once more.

You’d have to have rocks in your brain not to be, Tuatara’s CEO Regan Wood observed. Since there hasn’t been any professional baseball in New Zealand for two years and nine months, Wood is aware that some of the team’s previous fans may not necessarily come back. It’s going to be really difficult, he said, “because we’re out of sight and out of memory.” We are not surprised to discover that we have come to a dead end. Fans will return if the team can consistently provide winning baseball, and manager Steve Mintz is optimistic about this year’s squad, which includes some players with MLB experience as well as some bright prospects.
