What breath-taking matchup in the men’s doubles Badminton. Both pairs of India and Chinese Taipei gave it all in a 3-game thriller. Both teams were active all around and read the other team very well. Game one went for Rankireddy/Shetty after an error from the Chinese Taipei pairing. Rankireddy sealed the first game with a thumping smash to take the opening game 21-16.

The second game was neck-and-neck before the Chinese Taipei pair latch on to some errors for an 11-8 lead at the mid-game interval. But it is the Chinese Taipei team who have been more clinical. A smash and they have six game points. One saved with a short serve. And one more with Lee netting a backhand. A between-the-legs smash pickup not enough for India to prolong this game. It was one game all with Taipei pair taking the second game 21-16

The third game also going neck-and-neck. Little to separate these two teams. It was the Chinese Taipei team who lead the mid-game interval 11-9 with two straight points.

Rankireddy and Shetty survive a thriller

A nervous finish to the game. Satwik and Chirag made to hold their nerves in the decisive game. They see out two match points come and go after a remarkable effort. On the third game point, Rankireddy rushed backhand into the bottom of the net. Fourth chance now. Chirag with some booming smashes one after another. And another goes begging. Chinese Taipei players get the luck of the net as the shuttle gets over somehow on the serve return.

Quickly, they create another chance. Sixth match point. Once again the serve return hits the net and goes over. Now it was Wang/Lee’s turn to try and convert a match point. An error, smash and the return is wide, the Indian paid survives. 25-25!

Finally, seventh match point for India after the Taipei pair tried to push the shuttle deep. India win! Shetty was on the floor in celebration and that was a very, very nervous win. They start Group A with a 21-16, 16-21, 27-25 victory.
