India’s campaign at the Yonex German Open 2023 ended on Wednesday as all four singles players lost in the first round in Mulheim, Germany. Top Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen made a shocking exit from the BWF World Tour Super 300 event, after losing 19-21, 16-21 to Frenchman Christo Popov in 45 minutes. National champion Mithun Manjunath fought hard but lost his men’s singles first round clash against Singapore’s fourth seeded Loh Kean Yew 8-21, 21-19, 11-21. Later in the day, Malavika Bansod fell 13-21, 14-21 to fifth-seeded Chinese player Wang Zhi Yi. 

Teenager Tasnim Mir, who reached the main draw after beating Ireland’s Rachael Darragh in the qualifying round, suffered an 8-21, 10-21 defeat against eighth-seeded shuttler from Thailand Pornpawee Chochuwong in 25 minutes in the women’s singles category. The mixed doubles pair of Ashwini Ponappa and B. Sumeeth Reddy had lost 10-21, 12-21 to the Scottish duo of Julie Macpherson and Adam Hall in their opening round fixture while junior world championships silver medalist Sankar Muthuswamy failed to win his qualifying round match on Tuesday.
