The 2023 edition of All England Open Badminton Championship got underway at Arena Birmingham on Tuesday, March 14. Much to the delight of Indian fans, both the Indians in action on the first day, HS Prannoy and Lakshya Sen, made a winning start to their campaigns. Last year’s finalist Sen got the better of fifth seeded Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipe 21-18, 21-19 in 48 minutes, while world no. 9 Prannoy knocked out Taiwanese player Tzu Wei Wang 21-19, 22-20 in 49 minutes.

Sen, who has slipped to world no. 19, used his speed and attacking prowess to secure his first win over the World no. 5 after losing twice before. Although Chou started the match brightly, taking a 3-1 lead, Sen quickly crawled back to 7-6 and led 11-8 at the mid-game interval. The crowd at Arena Birmingham were treated with some fiery rallies. The 21-year-old Indian shuttler kept a firm grip to move to 15-9. Meanwhile, Chou won the next eight points to level the score at 17-17, only to give it away with two errors. The second game was no different as Sen took a narrow lead going into the interval, before Chou made a comeback at 18-19. But a service error from Chou handed a match point to Sen and the Indian managed to seal the match with a booming return.

Earlier, Prannoy looked in good touch as he stormed into a 11-4 lead. However, the Indian was guilty of missing the lines twice and also found the net, allowing Wang to cut down the deficit to three points at 11-14. Pranoy managed to extend the lead to six points at 18-12 with four straight points before the Taiwanese shuttler broke the run of points with an aggressive return. Once again, the 30-year-old Keralite made a couple of errors, allowing Wang to level the score at 19-19, before securing the game with two well directed smashes. The second game was a tightly fought battle from the word go. Although Wang opened up a 7-2 lead, Prannoy fought back to make it 16-16. Once again the scores were tied at 19-19. The Indian then went on to clinch the game at 22-20 and thereby sealed the match.
