Korea Open 2022: PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth enter semi-finals

Two time Olympic medalist Sindhu secured her 17th win over Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-10, 21-16  in the women’s singles quarter-finals.

Top Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth enter the semi-finals of 2022 Korea Open Super 500 badminton tournament with contrasting victories in the women’s singles and men’s singles event respectively on Thursday. Two time Olympic medalist Sindhu secured her 17th win over Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-10, 21-16  in the women’s singles quarter-finals. Meanwhile Srikanth rode on his power and precision to get the better of Son Wan Ho 21-12, 18-21, 21-12 in a match which lasted just over an hour.

Sindhu had no issues disposing off Busanan, whom she had defeated at the Swiss Open final last month. The Thai led 5-2 in the opening game but after the initial hiccup, Sindhu dominated the proceedings and kept the match under her tight grip. 

Leading 7-2, the Indian produced an eight-point burst to pull away from the Thai and grab the lead in the match. Sindhu continued her dominance after the change of ends as she held a 8-2 lead and kept moving ahead as the Thai crumbled. The world no 7 finished the encounter in 43 minutes. 

Srikanth’s hard-fought victory

In men’s singles, it was a battle between the former world number ones, and Srikanth showed better control as he dominated the short rallies to move to a comfortable 11-6 lead at the first interval and though Son Wan Ho fought back to make in 12-14, the Indian soon upped his game to walk away with the first game. 

The korean came out all guns blazing in the second game, opening up a 10-7 lead but Srikanth moved ahead to 13-11. But Son Wan Ho held his nerve to take it to the decider. 

World Championship silver medalist, Srikanth made a very good start to the final game, taking a 4-0 lead but unforced errors allowed the Korean to make it 4-6. An alert Srikanth soon changed gears and played some powerful smashes to take a 11-7 lead at the break.

Srikanth continued to play attacking game with precision and the Korean had no answer to it. The Indian extended the lead to 16-10. Srikanth secured eight match points and he sealed it when Son Won Ho hit the net. 

Indian men’s doubles team bow out

In the men’s doubles , Indian dup Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty went down fighting 22-20, 18-21, 22-20 against the South Korean Kang Minhyuk and Seo Seung Jae and are knocked out of the tournament. Nevertheless overall it was a good outing for the Indian pair.
