Indian shuttler HS Prannoy stormed into the quarter-finals with a stunning straight-game victory against former world champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore at the Japan Open Super 750 tournament here on Thursday. The 30-year-old is the last remaining Indian in the competition after Kidambi Srikanth was knocked out following a 21-10, 21-16 defeat to local favourite Kanta Tsuneyama. Prannoy was at his best to get the better of the eighth-seeded Singaporean 22-20, 21-19 in 44 minutes.
The world number 18, who reached the quarterfinals of world championships last week, recorded a third win over the world number 7 in four meetings. Prannoy will next face Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen, who won the bronze medal at the world championships last week, in the last-8 stage. The 30-year-old had earlier beaten Chen in their last two meetings, but overall, he is 3-4 behind.
