India’s Lakshya Sen and Saina Nehwal made an impressive start to the Indonesia Masters Badminton championship, advancing to the second round of singles event with contrasting wins on Wednesday. However, their compatriots HS Prannoy, Priyanshu Rajawat and Kidambi Srikanth faltered in the first round. Sen, who had a lackluster start to the 2023 season, following early exits from Malaysia and India Open in the last two weeks, came out with a dominant performance to get the better of Japan’s new sensation Kodai Naraoka 21-12, 21-11 in the opening match. Meanwhile London Olympics bronze medalist Nehwal secured a 21-15, 17-21, 21-15 win over Chinese Taipei’s Pai Yu Po to make it to the pre-quarter-finals.

World No. 9 Prannoy suffered a straight set 19-21,10-21 loss to Japan’s Kanta Tsuneyama. It was a second straight first round exit for the 30-year-old, having suffered a similar fate in the opening round of the India Open last week. Meanwhile, the top ranked Indian had reached the semi-finals of Malaysia Open Super 1000, earlier this month. Former World No. 1 and  world championship medalist Kidambi Srikanth also exited after losing 10-21, 22-24 to Indonesia’s Shesar Hiren Rhustavitoin in 39 minutes. Rajawat, who came through the qualifiers, also couldn’t extend his entry into the main draw, going down 21-18, 18-21, 18-21 to Chico Aura Wardoyo of Indonesia in the opening round.
