Top Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen will begin his Indonesia Masters 2023 campaign with a first round encounter against World No. 7 Kodai Naraoka in Jakarta on Wednesday. The 21-year old didn’t make a great start to the 2023 season, having lost to Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke in the last-16 stage of the India Open Super 750 tournament last week. Meanwhile Priyanshu Rajawat progressed to the main draw with two fine victories but the rest of the Indians including the 2019 world championship bronze medalist Sai Praneeth in the men’s singles category, faltered in the qualifying round of the Super 500 tournament. Rajawat, who had reached the final of the Odisha Open 100 tournament in 2022, defeated Denmark’s Victor Svendsen 21-10, 13-21, 21-13 after overcoming France’s Christo Popov 21-17, 21-19 in the opening match. The 20-year-old will face Indonesia’s Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo in the main draw.

The 2014 Indonesia Open champion HS Pranoy will take on World No. 7 Kanta Tsuneyama of Japan in the opening round fixture on Wednesday. The 30-year-old began the year by reaching the quarter-finals of Malaysia Open. The top ranked Indian however suffered a first round exit in the India Open last week. The World No. 8 went down against compatriot Lakshya Sen in straight sets. Tsuneyama, on the other hand, started the year with a semi-final appearance in the Malaysia Open, but then opted to skip the India open. In the women’s singles section, Indian veteran Saina Nehwal is set to take on 32nd ranked Pai Yu Po in the first round of the tournament. The World No. 28 will enter the contest as favorite, having reached the second round of India Open last week.
