World number one Viktor Axelsen stormed his way past Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie and into the final of the India Open badminton final. The Danish shuttler defeated Christie in the men’s singles semi-final match with a scoreline of 21-6, 21-12  in 38 minutes at the KD Jadhav Hall in New Delhi on Saturday. He will play Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the final on Sunday. Vitidsarn got the better of Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Anthony Ginting 27-25, 21-15 in the other semi-final of the day. Meanwhile, when it comes to the women’s singles category, South Korea’s An Se Young showed why she has been able to win 11 world tour titles at such a young age, as she came from behind to overcome fourth seed He Bing Jiao of China 11-21, 21-16, 21-16. The 25-year old South Korean will take on top seed Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi in the title-decider. The two-time world champion Yamaguchi overcame Thailand’s Supanida Katethong 21-17, 21-14.

Axelsen, who won the India Open in 2017 and 2019, smashed through the defence of a struggling Christie in a one-sided encounter. The Tokyo Olympics and World championship gold medalist used his height to good effect, reaching every shuttle thrown at him. Meanwhile, Christie allowed the 29-year-old to use his trademark jump smash more often or not. The result was that the opening game ended at 21-6. The second game was no different as Axelsen never took the foot off the pedal and moved to a 4-0 lead. Although Christie clawed his way back to level the score at 6-6, the Dane wriggled out with his powerful smashes and sealed it when Indonesia fluffed the line.
