World no. 1 Akane Yamguchi got the better of three-time world champion and Rio Olympics gold medalist Carolin Marin in the women’s quarter-finals of the Yonex Sunrise India Open badminton championship at the KD Jadhav Hall in New Delhi on Friday. The Japanese shuttler won the match with a scoreline of 21-17, 14-21, 21-9. Reigning All England Open champion, Yamaguchi handled the match with great poise, especially in the decider when she dropped just six points at the change of side, and three more thereafter to the Spaniard. Meanwhile, the reigning Olympic champions Chen Yu Fei of China pulled out of the last-8 fixture against Thailand’s Supanida Katethong due to illness and the 25-year-old was given a walkover. Katethong and Yamaguchi will go head-to-head in the semi-final on Saturday.

The other semi-final in the women’s singles section will be between second seed An se Young of South Korea and the fourth seed He Being Jiao of China. In the men’s singles category, former world junior champion Kunlavat Vitidsarn upset third seed and last editions finalist Loh Kean Yew of Singapore while sixth seed Indonesia Anthony Ginting defeated China’s Li Shi Feng. Reigning World and Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark also advanced to the semi-finals after his opponent Rasmus Gemke had to be taken off the court on a wheelchair following a fall. Axelsen will take on Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie in the last-4 stage on Saturday.
