India’s challenge at the India Open Super 750 came to an abrupt end as early as the second round after defending champions Lakshya Sen and two time winner Saina Nehwal suffered contrasting defeats on Thursday evening at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall in New Delhi. Sen, who had defeated compatriot HS Pranoy to reach the last-16, lost out to Danish shuttler Rasmus Gemke with a scoreline of 16-21, 21-15, 21-18. The 21-year-old made an aggressive start, producing a series of attacking shots early on to take a 11-9 lead at the first mid-game break, and then the Indian went on to pocket the opening game 21-15. However, the Dane managed to clinch the second set without much difficulty and came out all guns blazing in the decider, racing to a 8-1 lead before Sen took five points to crawl his way back in. Although the game went down the wire, Gemke prevailed 21-18 to enter the quarter-finals.

Gemke will now take on compatriot Viktor Axelsen, who defeated Y Q Shi in three games. Saina, meanwhile, was comfortably outclassed by Olympic champion Chen Yufei. The veteran Indian lost the match with a scoreline of  9-21, 12-21. The 2012 Olympic bronze medalist began her campaign with a three-game win over Mia Blichfeldt. Earlier in the day, men’s doubles defending champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag shetty pulled out of the second round due to a groin injury. Meanwhile, Gayatri Gopichand-Jolly Treesa, Krishna Prasad Garaga and Vishnuvardhan Panjala were knocked out in the second round.
