PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth and Lakshya Sen registered convincing victories in their respective round of 32 games on Thursday.
India made a dominant start to their singles campaign in the badminton event at the Commonwealth Games 2022, as PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth and Lakshya Sen registered convincing victories in their respective round of 32 games. Sindhu routed Maldives’ Fathimath Nabaaha Abdul Razzaq 21-4, 21-11 in the women’s singles first round, while Srikanth outclassed Uganda’s shuttler Daniel Wanagaliya 21-9, 21-9 in the men’s singles event. And then, later in the day, Sen stormed past 45-year-old Vernon Smeed of St Helena with a scoreline of 21-5, 21-5. Meanwhile Akarshi Kashyap had to toil hard to get the better of Mahoor Shahzad in her opening round match.
Sindhu will next face Uganda’s Husina Kobugabe in the pre-quarterfinal stage, while Srikanth takes on Sri Lanka’s Dumindu Abeywickrama, Sen will face off against Australia’s Lin Ying Xiang and Kashyap’s next opponent is Cyprus’ Eva Kattirtzi. Meanwhile the only disappointment for Indian badminton on Day 7 of the games was the elimination of the mixed doubles duo of Ashwini Ponappa and B Sumeeth Reddy. The India pair were defeated 18-21, 16-21 by world number 47 Callum Hemming and Jessica Pugh in the opening round fixture.
