Indian badminton team had to settle for bronze in the mixed team event at the Commonwealth Games 2022 on Tuesday. Team India lost the gold medal match to Malaysia with a scoreline of 3-1. Only PV Sindhu managed to earn a win in the summit clash against Malaysia in the women’s singles match. In the first match of the tie, the men’s doubles duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty showed great fighting spirit but in the end went down 21-18, 21-15. In the third match of the tie, Kidambi srikanth  came up with an underwhelming performance and went down 21-19, 6-21, 21-16. For India to retain gold, a lot depended on the outcome of the men’s doubles pair of Reddy and shetty.

The opening contest was full of long rallies but the Indian duo lost the majority of them , failing to keep pace with the aggressive Malaysian pair. In the women’s singles, 26-year-old Sindhu led 11-6 in the first interval, but the world no. 60 Goh Jin Wei made a strong comeback to take the game till the end. Two-time Olympics medalist Sindhu ended a rally with a powerful forehand smash to make it 21-20 before the Malaysian netted a return. The second game was no different as Malaysian fought hard and Sindhu had to dig deep But the Indian managed to pocket the game at 21-17 and thereby won the match.
