Indian shuttlers recorded a dominant 5-0 win over Pakistan in their mixed team campaign Group A opener at the 2022 commonwealth Games Opener on Friday.  The duo of Ashwini Ponappa and Sumeeth Reddy started the proceeding in the mixed doubles fixture, getting the better of Muhammad Irfan/ Ghazala Siddiqui 21-9, 21-12 at the National Exhibition Centre. Former world no. 1 Kidambi Srikanth followed up with a 21-7, 21-12 win over Murad Ali in the men’s singles fixture to double India’s lead in the tie. Then, it was the turn of double Olympic medalist PV Sindhu, who stormed past Mahoor Shahzad in women’s singles. The world number 7 Indian shuttler won 21-7, 21-6. The 26-year-old Indian’s powerful smashes were too hot for Mahoor to handle.

Having secured the win, India’s men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty took the court. The India pair completed a straight set 21-12, 21-9 win over the Pakistani duo of Muhammad Bhatti and Murad Ali. The last fixture of the tie saw the women’s doubles team of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand beat their opponents 21-4, 21-5 to complete the clean sweep. The gulf in class was evident as the Indian team didn’t drop a game, winning a total of 210 points and  conceding just 83. India will next face Sri Lanka and Australia on July 30 in their second and third Group A fixtures. The top two teams from each of the four groups will go through to the quarter finals.
