The Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced the updated BWF Tournament Calendar for 2021. The changes are made to keep in mind the best time to host badminton tournaments over the next six months. According to the new calendar, Sudirman Cup has been shifted from China. Finland will be the new host and Spain will host World Badminton Championships in December.

“The new calendar represents an assessment of what are the most feasible tournaments to take place in the coming months. Europe is seen as a more feasible region to conduct tournaments at this present time with higher rates of vaccine implementation and less travel restrictions,” BWF Secretary General Thomas Lund said.

“While a number of tournament hosts in Asia are eager to stage tournaments, the general feedback surrounding COVID-19 restrictions and the uncertainty of the situation there has meant that it is likely only a few tournaments could possibly take place”, according to Lund.

BWF has announced, the next ranking cycle will start immediately following the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The new calendar offers players a safe and consistent platform to earn important world ranking points and prize money in this crucial post-Olympic Games period for the sport.

COVID-19 restrictions have meant it is not feasible to conduct tournaments in China this year.

Therefore, alternative host cities have been identified for the BWF Sudirman Cup Finals 2021, HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2021.
