HS Prannoy stunned second seed Kento Momota in straight games to secure a stunning victory and sail through to the men’s singles pre-quarterfinals of the BWF World Championship here on Wednesday. Prannoy will meet his compatriot Lakshya Sen in the Round of 16 stage on Friday. Commonwealth Games champions Lakshya overcame Spain Luis Penalver in the Round of 32 match earlier in the day. Meanwhile, last edition’s runner-up Kidambi Srikanth crashed out of the tournament after a straight game defeat to world number 32 Zhao Jun Peng.   

Unseeded Prannoy defeated two-time world champion Momota of Japan with a scoreline of 21-17, 21-16 in the second round tie. Incidentally it was Pranoy’s first win over Momota in eight games. In their previous clashes, the Indian won only once against the Japanese shuttler.  Lakshya, on the other hand secured a 21-17, 21-10 victory over the Spanish opponent to book a meeting with Prannoy.

The 2022 BWF world Championship  will commence on August 22 and end on August 28.
