Lieke Klaver is a track and field athlete from the Netherlands who specializes in 200m and 400m distances. She competed for the Netherlands in the women’s 400 meters and both the women’s and mixed 4 X 400 meters relays, finishing sixth and fourth in the relay events at the 2020 Summer Olympics. At the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, during the summer, Klaver lessened her outdoor pre-2022 best of 50.98 seconds down to 50.18 seconds, finishing fourth in the final and narrowly missing out on a podium finish. However, she overcame this disappointment by clocking a time of 3:09.90 to earn the silver medal in the 4 x 400 m mixed team competition, which was also a new national record.

Klaver, an undergraduate at the HAN University of Applied Sciences, started jogging when she was nine years old. Klaver had little interest in athletics at one time in her career until her mother encouraged her to give it a shot. She wanted to dance, but her mother questioned if she should pursue athletics since she was often running with her brother. She initially concentrated on the 100- and 200-meter races, but the coach advised her to try the 400-meter race because of her height. According to her Olympics biography, the Adidas athlete works out nine times a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, with Sunday serving as her rest day.

Femke Bol and Klaver, two of the top Dutch athletes, have built a strong friendship over the years. The pair initially met at the 2017 European U20 Championships in Grosseto, where Klaver placed sixth in the 200m final and Bol failed to advance to the finals, although they hardly spoke throughout that trip. It wasn’t until they shared a room at the 2019 World Athletics Relays in Yokohama that the competitors began to form an unusual bond. Their friendship began because of their clumsiness, according to Klaver. Klaver hit her head on the window as she attempted to open it in their shared room, which had a high window. Femke repeated the same two minutes later, and both laughed.

Yokohama also marked the beginning of their respective senior international careers, despite being only 18 months apart in age. The two became closer as a result of their shared travel experiences, and they still laugh at their fan girl antics in Japan. They were like young ladies having an adventure when they spotted athletes on the elevator. A fellow Dutch athlete named Lisanne de Witte once approached the girls and instructed them to concentrate on their competitions. Both believe their close friendship has helped them in progressing as athletes. Klaver admitted that Bol’s amazing exploits over the last year have given her extra motivation and a new sense of confidence. They have demonstrated exceptional skill in managing both rivalry and friendship.
