Keely Nicole Hodgkinson, popularly known as Keely Hodgkinson, is a British middle-distance athlete who specializes in 800 meter event. She claimed the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 in the 800m with a timing of 1:55.88. She, thus, shattered the British record on the process which was established by Kelly Holmes, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, in 1995. In 2022, she won the Commonwealth Games and World Championships silver medals. She capped off another amazing year by becoming the European Champion in Munich 2022, clocking 1:59.04 in the 800m discipline.

However, Keely’s journey was full of hurdles. It is important to note that since many lives were affected due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the UK Athletics, the governing body for the sport of athletics in the United Kingdom, didn’t add any athletes to their World Class Performance Program in 2020. As a result, a Liverpool-born athletic fan named Barrie Wells stepped up and sponsored Keely who later went on to bring laurels for Great Britain.

Keely Hodgkinson was born on March 3, 2022, and was raised in Atherton in Greater Manchester, close to Leigh and Wigan. She has three siblings who are younger than her.  Her father Dean had previously run the London Marathon, and her mother Rachel had trained for a period with Leigh Harriers. Keely attended Leigh Harriers at the age of nine, but first swam for Howe Bridge Aces before committing to running full-time.  She went to Loughborough College and Fred Longworth High School in Tyldesley. She enrolled at the Leeds Beckett University’s criminology program in 2020 before taking a year off in 2021.

Hodgkinson shattered the 800m under-20 world record in January 2021. She won the European gold medal in the indoor competition two months later, becoming the youngest Briton in history to do so. She accomplished in the 800m in Torun, Poland, just four days after turning 19 years old. She then astonished everyone once again by defeating seasoned runners Laura Muir and Jemma Reekie in the British Olympic Trials in June 2021. She then broke a remarkable new British record in the 800m final, giving Great Britain a silver medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. With a spectacular final 300 meters, she smashed Kelly Holmes’ long-standing British record from 1995, moving up from fifth to second.
