Ernest John Obiena, popularly known as EJ Obiena, represents the Philippines in pole vault competitions. He won the bronze medal at the World Championships in 2022, becoming the first Filipino athlete to achieve this feat. This mark of 5.94 which he set in Oregon was not only a national record but also an Asian record. In addition, he also represented the country at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 where he finished 11th in the finals. According to World Athletics, Obiena is presently ranked as the third-best male pole vaulter in the world (active) in the competition. Obiena is also the first Filipino to get a scholarship from World Athletics, formerly the International Athletic Association Federation (IAAF).
Obiena comes from a sporting background. His mother was a hurdler, while his father Emerson Obiena is a retired pole vaulter. His father won the silver medal at the Southeast Asian Games in 1993. When he was just eight years old, EJ Obiena began pole vaulting, but he preferred hurdles. However, in his last years of high school, he opted to return to pole vaulting in order to gain a scholarship for college. Later, he switched to pole vaulting and met Ukrainian pole vaulter Sergey Bubka, who gave him the chance to train in Italy with Bubka’s former coach, Vitaly Petrov. Since 2014, Petrov took over his coaching responsibilities.

Caroline Joyeux was born on March 26, 2001. She lives in Berlin and studies there, whereas Obiena trains in Italy. Joyeux met Obiena in October 2020 during a training camp in Fornia, Italy, where the Filipino pole vaulter did his training. As a result, the couple has been in a long-distance relationship for more than two years. Since they started dating, most of their communication has taken place over the phone or online. They met for the second time when Obiena traveled to Germany for one of his competitions. In September 2022, the triple jumper came to meet her boyfriend in his hometown for a trip. This was also her first visit to Asia. Joyeux ended her 2022 season by winning three consecutive competitions in Germany. She competes in additional events on occasion, such as the 100-meter sprint and the long jump, where she finished sixth in ISTAF 2022.
