Akani Simbine was born on 21 September 1993. Akani went to Edenglen High School and received his diploma there. He subsequently enrolled at the University of Pretoria, a public research institution with multiple campuses in Pretoria, where he earned a Bachelor of Information Science degree in 2017. Simbine was born to South African parents in Kempton Park, Gauteng, South Africa. He is a sprinter from South Africa who excels in the 100-meter race. He finished fifth in the men’s 100 meters at the 2016 Summer Olympics, and held it till July 2021 until Ferdinand Omurwa broke it in September 2021, he held the African record. His time was 9.84 seconds.
Simbine finished fourth in the men’s 100-meter finals at the World Championships in both 2017 and 2019. He also won the 100-meter title at the 2018 African Championships and the 2018 Commonwealth Games. With a South African record time of 38.24 seconds, he helped South Africa finish second at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and win the 4×100-meter relay at the African Championships in 2016 and 2018. At the 2021 World Relays, he helped South Africa win the gold. Simbine has placed among the top five in the last four major championship 100-meter races, including fourth in the men’s 100-meter race at the 2019 World Athletics Championships and fifth in the men’s 100-meter race at the 2020 Summer Olympics, where he lost out on the bronze medal to Canadian sprinter Andre De Grasse.
Simbine competed in the men’s 100 meters on April 15 at the South African Championships in Pretoria, completing his first-round heat in 10.11 seconds. The wind was again above the record-setting limit at +2.8 m/s when he won his semifinal in 9.82 seconds, the fastest time he had ever run. The following day, he recorded his 29th sub-10-second time with a time of 9.99 seconds to win the championship, finishing 0.17 seconds faster than Gift Leotlela, who came in second with a time of 10.16 seconds.
Simbine guided South Africa to victory in the men’s 4×100-meter relay at the 2021 World Relay two weeks later, on May 2. He took the baton three meters after Brazil’s Paulo André de Oliveira, but he was able to close the distance and finish one-hundredth of a second ahead of his country with a time of 38.71 seconds.
