Rai Benjamin is an American track and field athlete who specializes in 400m hurdles. From an early age, Rai had demonstrated an interest in athletics. He attended Mount Vernon High School in New York, where he established a 300-meter record at the New York Indoor State Meet. Rai became the three-time 400m hurdles NYSPHSAA champion while competing for his high school team. Additionally, he won the 400-meter and 400-meter hurdles national titles in high school. After completing high school, Rai Benjamin enrolled at the University of California, where he joined the UCLA Bruins athletic team. Later, he changed teams and joined the USC Trojans of the University of Southern California. He had competed for both teams in the NCAA Championships. Benjamin studied political science at the University of Southern California.
At the NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 2016, Rai Benjamin competed for the UCLA Bruins and made his national debut, placing sixth in the 400-meter hurdles. He earned the silver medal in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA Championships the following year. At the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships in 2018, Rai competed for the USC Trojans and won the 4x400m indoor championship as well as the bronze medal in the 200m sprints. He claimed two gold medals in the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 400-meter hurdles and the 4×400-meter relay that year. Rai Benjamin rose to national prominence in 2019 by winning the 400m Hurdles US Championship at the US Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He won the 400-meter hurdles title that year in June at the Prefontaine Classic.
Rai Benjamin made his first appearance on the international stage in 2013 at the World Youth Athletics Championships, finishing 15th in the semi-finals of the 400m Hurdles. He participated in the 4x 200m relay at the World Athletics Relays in 2015. However, his relay team couldn’t make it to the final. Rai competed for Antigua and Barbuda in both of the championships. In 2019, Rai competed in the 400m hurdles at the World Athletics Championships and was a member of the US relay team that won the 4x400m World Championship. He won two 400m hurdles circuit races at the Diamond League in 2019. Rai went on win the silver medals in Summer Olympics 2020 in 400 m hurdles and 4×400 m relay event in Tokyo.
