Laura Muir, a Tokyo Olympic silver medalist, is one of the best middle-distance athletes the United Kingdom has ever produced. Despite having a bad start to 2022 due to an injury, she has returned with some spectacular wins, including becoming the 1500m champion at the Commonwealth Games and the bronze medalist at the 2022 World Championships. Additionally, she was successful in defending her title at the Munich European Championships. She also holds the outdoor 1500 m and 1000 m national records.
Muir first joined her local athletics club when she was 11 years old, after a school classmate expressed interest in participating. She wasn’t the quickest athlete in her primary school. She initially trained twice a week, focusing primarily on sprints. However, as time went on, she increased this to three, four, and even five times a week, shifting her focus more towards the middle-distance group. She received her first Great Britain cap shortly after enrolling in college and joining her new coach Andy Young and she hasn’t looked back since.
Muir is a qualified veterinarian in addition to her outstanding athletic career. While still racing at a high level, Muir earned her degree from the esteemed veterinary school at the University of Glasgow in 2018. She began setting records in 2016 and claimed her first senior outdoor gold at the European Championships which took place in August 2018. At the 2019 European Indoor Championships, Muir accomplished the “double-double,” winning two gold medals in consecutive tournaments, becoming the first athlete in history to do so. She replicated her triumph in the same events in the Belgrade Championships in 2017 by winning gold in the 1,500 and 3,000 meters.
