Katerina Stefanidi is a track and field athlete from Greece who specializes in pole vaulting. With a leap of 4.85 metres, she captured the gold medal at the Olympics in Rio in 2016 and went on to win the global title in 2017. She has won the Diamond League four times and the bronze medal in the World Indoor Championships twice, in 2016 and 2018. She received accolades in 2017 for being the best female athlete in Europe, as well as in 2018 and 2019 for being the best female athlete in Greece. Her accomplishments have earned her the title of greatest female athlete in Greek sport history.

She belonged to an athletic family and hence, she also took part in sports from an early age. Georgios, her father, participated in the triple jump and played professional basketball in Greece’s top division. Zoi, her mother, was a sprinter who primarily participated in the 400 metre event. In her youth, Stefanidi played a variety of sports, including volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, ballet, and table tennis. She subsequently started taking part in track and field competitions. Despite having no official training, she had immediately found success. She soon started actively training for sprint events at the age of nine in order to keep pace with her rivals.

After watching the Summer Olympics 2020 on television, her father developed an interest in the pole vault and inspired his daughter to pursue it. According to Stefanidi, she didn’t enjoy pole vaulting at first and her father had put pressure on her. She, however, admitted that she enjoyed it a lot more than sprinting competitions. Katerina, then 11 years old, took part in her first competition the following summer. She set a global age-group record of 2.30 meters despite not being strong enough to bend the pole. In 2014, she broke the previous record for world 14-year-old by leaping 4.14 meters. At this time, it was evident that she was destined to become a pole vaulting superstar, and nothing seemed to be able to stop her.
