Eleanor Patterson is an Australian athlete who specializes in high jump. When she was eight years old, Eleanor Patterson first got involved in sports through a friend. She went to Little Athletics with her friend after spending the night at a friend’s house. The primary school teacher of Patterson at St. Laurence O’Toole Primary School in Leongatha noticed her enthusiasm for sports and supported her. Patterson grew up in the South Gippsland Shire town of Leongatha, located 135 kilometers south-east of Melbourne. As the synthetic facility was closed and an hour distant, she could only train on a grass track. Kaila McKnight, a 1500-meter Olympian from London, served as Patterson’s inspiration because McKnight lived in a nearby little rural community. Seeing her compete at the highest level encouraged Patterson that even she could do this too.

Patterson began winning national high jump championships at the age of 13. She rose to prominence after taking home the gold at the 2013 World Youth or U18 Championship in Donetsk, Ukraine. Later that year, she smashed the 1.96-meter world U18 record. She then won a gold medal at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games with a clearance of 1.94 meters while finishing her senior year in high school. At the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, Patterson continued her incredible international record by finishing eighth and became the first Australian woman to qualify for the high jump final in 24 years. She made her Olympic debut in Rio, clearing 1.89m but failing to qualify for the final.

Patterson did not make the Commonwealth Games squad in 2018. As a result, she took a year off before resuming and qualifying for the Summer Olympics 2020 in Tokyo. After a short break from high jumping, she returned in the latter half of 2019. Her form improved significantly under the guidance of Australian Athletics Olympic team coach Alex Stewart. She claimed that he accepted her into his team, nurtured her, and gave her the opportunity to develop both as an athlete and, more importantly, as a person. She made a promising 1.90m clearance in late 2019 but was not chosen for the World championships. Patterson nonetheless earned a spot in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and came in fifth in the competition.
