Eilish McColgan is a British athlete who specializes in long and middle-distance running events. She was born in Dundee, Scotland to athletes Liz and Peter McColgan. She is a member of the Hawkhill Harriers Club in Dundee, where her mother Elizabeth Nuttell, a former world champion in the 10,000-meter race and Olympic silver medalist, who was known by Liz McColgan throughout her racing career, is the coach. She attended Dundee High School and went on to study mathematics and accounting at the University of Dundee, where she graduated in 2013. McColgan became the stepdaughter of long-distance runner John Nuttall after her mother’s second marriage. She is presently dating Michael Rimmer, a former middle-distance runner for Great Britain and England.
She earned bronze in the 3000 meters at the 2017 European Indoor Championships in Belgrade. McColgan won silver in the 5000-meter track competition at the 2018 European Athletics Championships. She also succeeded at the Great South Run in Portsmouth in 2018 with a time of 54:43. In Oslo on July 1, 2021, McColgan achieved a new British record for the 5000-meter run with a time of 14:28.55, breaking Paula Radcliffe’s previous record by 17 years. She came in at number ten in her heat on July 30th, with a time of 15:09.68, at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in Japan, but she was unable to move on to the 5000 m final. A few days later, she again participated in the 10,000-meter race, placing ninth with a timing of 31:04.46. This was her third appearance at the Summer Olympics.
