Sumit Antil created history after winning gold in the F64 Men’s javelin throw at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics with a distance of 68.55m. He covered a distance of 68.08m in his second attempt to set a new world record for this category. After a bike accident that required an amputation to his left leg, Antil did not want to give up sports.
In July 2017, 2018 Asian Games silver medalist Virender Dhankar and javelin coach Naval Singh, he began to train at New Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Since then, he hasn’t looked back, going on to create history in his division of the sport. His rise to prominence came two years later, after he clinched a silver medal at the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships booking him a place at the Tokyo Olympics.

In 2021, the man from Haryana was conferred with the Khel Ratna award, which is the highest sporting honour in India. After his heroics in Tokyo, Antil was further awarded the Padma Shri Award, the fourth-highest civilian award of the country.
