Shanti Pereira - Meet the No. 1 sprinter of Asia in women’s 100m

Singaporean sprinter Shanti Pereira has made history by becoming the first and only Singaporean to win the women’s 100m outdoor World Athletics Asia rankings. The 26-year-old set her 100-meter record on March 3 at the New Zealand Track and Field Championships in a time of 11:46. This time, which ranks 23rd overall in the world in 2023, is the fastest by an Asian. By beating Arisa Kimishima of Japan to this record time of 11:46 seconds, she took the top spot in the Asia World Athletics rankings.

 At the open 100m of the Sydney Track Classic, Kimishima ran a time of 11:48. She matched Pereira’s record. At the Asian Games in Hangzhou, Pereira and Kimishima will likely compete against one another. In addition to Pereira, Kayla Richardson of the Philippines placed fifth in the World Athletics on March 11 after clocking a time of 11:07:8 in the California competition. Meanwhile, Pereira also broke the World Athletics 1,100-point barrier. Any athlete would consider this a major accomplishment. To help athletes get ready for major Games, she will also receive financial support. She qualifies because she was awarded a Sports Excellence (Spex) Scholarship.

On September 21st, 1996, Shanti Pereira was born in Singapore. She excelled in the 100-meter, 200-meter, 4 x 100-meter, and 4 x 400-meter relay events. At the 2013 World Youth Championships in Athletics in Donetsk, Ukraine, she ran the 100 meters in under 12 seconds, becoming the first female Singaporean to do so. At the 2015 Southeast Asian Games, she ran the 100 meters in 11:08. She won a bronze medal. This was Singapore’s first medal in this competition in 42 years. She completed a diploma program in sports and leisure management at Singapore Sports School and Republic Polytechnic. To study accounting at Singapore Management University, she was also given the Yip Pin Xiu Scholarship.
