Muhammed Ajmal, the National Games gold medalist from Kerala, claimed the men’s 400m race at the National Open Championships held in Trivandrum on Monday. Ajmal clocked a time of 46.90s in the final, improving on his time of 47.77s in the semi-finals. While Ajmal’s performance was impressive, he narrowly missed out on the men’s 400m qualifying standard of 46.17s for the 2022 Asian Games set by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).

Rahul Ramesh Kadam and Santhosh Kumar T won the silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the men’s 400m race. In the women’s senior race, Jyothika Sri Dandi won the gold medal with a time of 53.26s, narrowly edging out Aishwarya Kailash Mishra who won silver. Kiran Pahal won the bronze medal. The under-16 girls’ race saw Heena Rezoana Mallick from West Bengal establish a new national record in her age group with a time of 53.22s. Mallick’s time beat the previous record of 54.57s, which was held by Anjana Thamke L since October 2012. Priya Mohan, a former national champion and world junior athletics championships medalist, won the women’s under-20 crown. Priya had also captured the Khelo India University Games 2022 title, by defeating Dutee Chand, the national record holder.

Notably absent from the event were Muhammed Anas Yahiya, the national record holder in the men’s 400m race, Rupal Chaudhary, the bronze medalist in the 400m from the last year’s World under-20 Athletics Championships which took place in Cali. Arokia Rajiv, Noah Nirmal Tom, and Amoj Jacob, all the athletes who had represented India at the Tokyo Olympics, were also not a part of the competition.
