Murali Sreeshankar recently became the first ever Indian to qualify for men’s long jump final at World Championships in Oregon two weeks ago. Now, the 23-year old is set to better that feat by aiming for a podium finish at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham.
He finished seventh among 12 athletes, with a 7.96 m jump in his first attempt. Alongside him, long jumpers Jeswin Aldrin, and Muhammed Anees Yahiya have also qualified for the CWG 2022 in Birmingham. The man from Kerala also holds the national record of 8.36 metres set this year and has gone from strength to strength.
His good form has helped him to 8M-plus jumps on many occasions and goes into the tournaments as the season leader among all Commonwealth countries. He jumped above 8.15m-plus on three seperate occasions at 8.18, 8.31m and 8.23m. Australia’s Christopher Mitrevski and Bahamas’ LaQuan Nairn will be two close threats for the Indian rising sensation in Birmingham.
