The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, under its flagship program Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), approved the proposals of Neeraj Chopra, Kidambi Srikanth, Annu Rani, and Deepak Punia for their overseas training. The announcement was made by the Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) in its 86th meeting that took place on Friday, November 18. The MOC is an organization set up by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to choose athletes who will receive TOPS assistance.

Tokyo Olympics gold medalist and World Championship Oregon silver medalist Neeraj Chopra‘s proposal to train at Loughborough University in the United Kingdom (UK) was accepted during the meeting.  Neeraj, together with coach Dr. Klaus Bartonietz and physiotherapist Ishaan Marwaha, will train at Loughborough for 63 days and will be departing for the United Kingdom later this week. Apart from Neeraj, the MOC approved former World Championship silver medalist shuttler Kidambi Srikanth‘s request to train with his coach and physiotherapist at Prisma Sports Club in Jakarta, Indonesia, for 29 days.

Besides Neeraj and Srikanth, the body has accepted the proposals of Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 gold medalist Deepak Punia (wrestling) and Commonwealth Games (CWG) bronze medalist javelin thrower Annu Rani. While Deepak will train with his physiotherapist in Michigan, USA, for 34 days, Annu will work with her physiotherapist at Leichtathletik-Gemeinschaft (LG) Offenburg in Germany, under coach Werner Daniels, who previously trained Neeraj.

The SAI’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme would cover the player’s and their support staff’s airline, housing, local travel, and meal costs, among other expenses. TOPS will also provide each athlete with a $50 per day out-of-pocket budget for any extra expenses incurred during their stay. The overall approximate cost of training for all of the athletes indicated above would be roughly Rs 94 lakh, which would be covered by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) National Sports Development Fund (NSDF).
