Manju Bala advanced to the final of the Women’s Hammer Throw at the Commonwealth Games 2022. She finished 11th overall with a best attempt of 59.68 m in the Qualification Round. Fellow hammer thrower Sarita Romit Singh, with a throw of 57.48 m missed out finishing 13th. World Championships Silver medallist Camryn Rogers set the Games record with a gigantic throw of 74.68 m. She topped the chart, followed by New Zealand’s Julia Ratcliffe who threw 68.73 m. Both were the only hammer throwers who could breach the direct qualification mark.

Hailing from the Churu district of Rajasthan, Manju won a bronze at the Asian Games 2014 in Incheon. It was upgraded to Silver after the Gold medallist Zhang tested positive for a dope test. However, she was later reinstated as the Gold medal winner after successfully overturning the doping ban.

Tejaswin Shankar clinched India’s first-ever medal in the men’s high jump with the mark of 2.22m. With this, India earned its first medal in Athletics at Commonwealth Games 2022. Sprinter Hima Das qualified for the Women’s 200m semi-final after a top finish in Heat 2. She clocked a timing of 23.42 secs to book her ticket to the semis. Earlier, Murali Sreeshankar and Muhammed Anees Yahiya had qualified for the Men’s long jump final. The 23-year-old Sreeshankar stormed into the final on his first jump (8.05m), breaching the direct qualification mark (8.00m). While Anees (7.68m) too joined his compatriot with an eighth-place finish in the Qualification.
