Murali Sreeshankar finished sixth in the Diamond League Meeting with an average effort of 7.94m in Monaco on Wednesday. Sreeshankar achieved his best jump in his fifth attempt, days after winning silver in Birmingham with a best jump of 8.08m. Last month, Sreeshankar finished seventh in the World Championships in Eugene, USA. His personal best jump stands at 8.36 m.
Making his debut at the Wanda Diamond League event, Sreeshankar opened with 7.61m, improving to 7.84m in his second attempt, followed by 7.83m in the next. The fourth attempt was 7.69m and his best of 7.94m came next. The performances were not at the same level as in England, as he struggled to get going in his first appearance at the Stade Louis II in Fontvieille.
Maykel Masso of Cuba finished first with the best effort of 8.35m while reigning Olympic champion and World No.1 Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece (8.31m) and Marquis Dendy (8.31m) of USA finished second and third respectively.
Sreeshankar has done well since the Tokyo Olympics and has improved massively in the last 12 months. His current coaching team includes his father S Murali, new foreign coach Russian Denis Kapustin, who won the 2000 Sydney Olympics triple jump bronze medal. Murali Sreeshankar will next be seen in action in Lausanne, Switzerland towards the end of August.
