Kenyans Sharon Lokedi (women) and Evans Chebet (men) both claimed victories in the New York City Marathon 2022, making a huge impression on Sunday, November 6, 2022. While both Sharon and Evans received $100,000 each on their win. The wheelchair competitions were won by Marcel Hug in the men’s category and Susannah Scaroni in the women’s discipline.

In the men’s race, an unfortunate incident occurred when Daniel Do Nascimento, who had been leading the race, fell 21 miles just before coming to Manhattan and was treated by medical personnel. He had stopped for a quick 20-second restroom break a few miles earlier. The 33-year-old Chebet broke away from the pack while pursuing Do Nascimento as they crossed the Manhattan. Then, he took the lead after Do Nascimento fell and didn’t face any challenge from the rest of the competitors, ensuring a comprehensive victory.  Early this year, Chebet also took first place in the Boston Marathon 2022.

In her first-ever marathon, Lokedi won the title with a timing of 2 hours, 23 minutes, and 23 seconds, slightly ahead of Israeli runner Lonah Chemtai Salpeter. The 28-year-old  Lokedi was in a close race until the final two kilometers, when she drew ahead of Chemtai by seven seconds and finished roughly 50 seconds off the course record. Course records were broken in the wheelchair races for men and women an hour earlier.
