Two Ethiopian runners Milkesa Mengesha and Tadu Teshome won the Copenhagen Half Marathon on September 18, 2022. The world U20 cross-country champion in 2019 Mengesha, defeated a strong field to win his second half-marathon of the year in a personal best time of 58:58. Meanwhile, Teshome shattered her personal best to lead an all-Ethiopian 1-2-3, winning in 1:06:13.

The men’s race got off to a steady start with a 5km time of 14:02 but the next few kilometers were slightly slower as the large lead pack completed 10km in 28:10. The frontrunners, which included Mengesha, Chala Regasa, Felix Kipkoech, Vincent Kipkemoi, Edmund Kipngetich, and Dominic Lobalu, then began to accelerate their pace. The lead pack had shrunk to 12 by the time they arrived at the 15km stage in 42:06. They stayed together for a few more kilometers before Mengesha began to pull away, building out a little gap before winning in 58:58.

The women’s race got underway remarkably quickly, but it soon devolved into a battle of endurance as competitors did their best to hang on. After the first 5 km got over in a quick 15:19, a majority of the lead pack slowed down. However, Teshome and Tsigie Gebreselama kept up their pace for an additional 5km, finishing the 10km in 30:40 within both of their personal bests. Gebreselase then separated herself from Teshome, creating a gap of 30 seconds by 15 km. However, it was short-lived as Teshome caught up to her compatriot with roughly two km remaining. She maintained her lead and won in 1:06:13, 22 seconds ahead of Gebreselama, who was making her half marathon debut.
