Wolfsburg sign Danish striker Jonas Wind; Max Kruse to return

Wolfsburg have made the most of the January transfer window to boost their attack by signing Jonas Wind from Danish club FC Copenhagen and are also set for the return of Max Kruse from Union Berlin, bringing the striker back to the Volkswagen Arena following a season at the club in 2015/16. The Danish striker has netted 11 goals in 27 games for Copenhagen in the ongoing season. His initial contract is till 2026 and might get a chance to debut for the Wolves in their next league encounter. 

“Jonas has very good technique, finds solutions in the tightest space, has a good heading game and really works for the team,” said Wolfsburg sporting director Marcel Schäfer. “Even though he brings a good deal of experience, we’re convinced his development still isn’t over and he can take the next step with us.”

The Danish will be donning No.23 jersey and replaces Wout Weghorst, who has left for Premier League club Burnley. The 22-year-old said of his arrival: “I’m happy to be here. I opted for Wolfsburg because they really wanted me. Wolfsburg is a really big club, and I’m glad and proud now to be part of the club. I’m looking forward to what’s to come.”

He graduated through the academy of Copenhagen, having made his debut in the Danish Superliga, scoring 13 goals in 17 outings in the U19 Boys League in 2016/17 before adding a further six goals in 13 appearances in the following season. 

Wind also found the net, a spectacular 12 times in his first season in the league, to help the club seal the title. He was also a part of Denmark’s squad at UEFA Euro 2020 and came on as a substitute in the semi-final defeat to England, having started their opening fixture against Finland.

Kruse, meanwhile, has agreed a deal valid until 30 June 2023, pending a medical check on Monday. 
“I made the decision to return to Wolfsburg because our story isn’t over yet,” Kruse said in a statement on the club’s website. “I know what’s in store for me and I accept the challenge. I’m looking forward to joining the team and will give everything to help them.”

He netted six goals and eight assists in 32 Bundesliga outings for the Wolves in 2015/16 following his arrival from Borussia Mönchengladbach besides featuring for Union Berlin in summer 2020 to help them qualify for the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League this season.
